Hailed as the greatest Broadway musical of all time, the genius of West Side Story’s creators is unquestioned. The remarkable collaboration between Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins produced a timeless masterpiece. It is in parts brilliant, effervescent and a reminder that stories repeat themselves throughout life and history. The story itself is based on “Romeo and Juliet”, with the Jets being the white Irish New Yorkers and the Sharks being Puerto Rican.
It is culturally significant because it moves from dialogue through to jazz and improvisation showing mood and tone changes in the story dynamic in a totally groundbreaking way (for the time). As Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian said “.. Sondheim/Berstein’s musical take on Romeo and Juliet still has snap, crackle and pop”, and you will see echoes of it across most contemporary musicals.
We will be learning the musical number “Cool” which will feature high energy and passionate choreography by NYC choreographer, Carson Reiners.
In West Side Story, “Cool” is a well-known song that is sung by Riff before the Rumble meeting. The Jets are itching to fight with the Sharks, but Riff tells them to wait for the rumble. This song is known for its fugal treatment of a jazz figure, described by one writer as “possibly the most complex instrumental music heard on Broadway to date!
